Cloud computing is increasingly an essential component of many companies; in fact 77% of large corporations use the cloud in one of its modalities. However, this is just the beginning since it is expected that in the year 2020 more than 34% of the world total digital information will be stored or transported through cloud services.
Telefónica R&D develops an important innovative activity in the area of Cloud Computing. It aims to define differential technologies in order to incorporate them in the products that Telefónica will market. Nowadays, developments are being carried out in different areas such Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) devices and services, virtualization, cloud content storage services or desktop or PC virtualization.
Telefónica R&D leads some of the subsidized research programmes of reference in the cloud area at both a national and international level. New technologies are being developed for network security, interoperability and applications, quality and service level agreements assurance. The goal is to provide a differential strategic value to the products so that customers perceive the value-added of Telefonica's network capacity, of the security of the applications, and of the capacity to migrate applications that are in the customers' private settings to the public cloud.
Some of the main lines we are working within this area have to do with concepts like "Virtual Public Cloud", allowing to deploy and manage – remotely and automatically – the infrastructure (servers, storage and databases) or "Virtual Private Cloud", allowing to house the user data centers without sharing the infrastructure with another user or company. Thanks to this line of work is presented a specific model for customer management and is adapted to the needs of this client type.
The concept of "Virtual Mobile" project is aimed at an ecosystem of services related to mobile virtualization to "upload" it to the cloud, it is also an important activity within the initiatives launched by Telefónica R&D. Thanks to this technology we can manage several virtual mobiles on the same physical device.
