M2M

The concept of M2M (Machine to machine) includes a number of technologies that are used in the process of information exchange between two remote machines, either through fixed and mobile networks, and without human intervention.

It is expected that by 2014 70% of consumer electronics devices will be connected to the Internet. Its use is not associated with a particular person, and also they will have the ability to connect to multiple networks across multiple technologies (3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, satellite TV, etc.).  In 2020 there will be 50 billion devices connected to the Internet.

In this context of information overload, Telefónica I+D is developing new platforms to collect and manage large amount of information that causes the use of M2M. Providing new sources of information to users, transforming data flows of intelligent cities in viable information and enabling massive data processing in a flexible and scalable way to improve their control are among its objectives.

One of the current challenges of Telefónica ID are the so-called "Smart Cities". These are characterized by infrastructure with advanced technology solutions, cutting-edge architectural elements, which promote sustainable economic development and high quality of life. All thanks to the spectacular development in recent years of ICT related to Internet of Things (sensor networks, RFIDs, etc.) and mobile data communications (M2M, Mobile Broadband, etc), which greatly expanded the many possibilities for improving urban services to levels never before imagined.
