Telefónica I+D's centre in Barcelona was inaugurated in 2002 after an agreement was signed between the Generalitat de Catalunya (Autonomous Government of Cataluña) and Telefónica. This agreement aimed to strengthen the development of the Information and Communication Society in Cataluña and become a point of reference for technological innovation within the autonomous community in collaboration with Catalan universities, institutions and companies.

In 2006, it became Telefónica I+D's Centre of Excellence for Internet and Multimedia, an area where the company had already enjoyed great success thanks to the creation and development of Imagenio, Telefónica's digital interactive television, to cite just one example.

In line with the transformation currently underway at Telefónica, it has carried out several key activities, such as:

  • Setting up the Internet and Multimedia scientific groups.
  • Establishing a firm commitment to innovation projects, backed by Telefónica's own innovation plan.
  • Placing emphasis on collaboration with other companies and co-designing with users.
