Research groups

Telefónica I+D is committed to becoming the foremost innovation company in the telecommunications sector. With this aim in mind, it has set up several research groups focusing on certain key areas under the leadership of world renowned researchers.

These groups follow an open research model in collaboration with universities and other research centres, and are in favour of disseminating the results of their work through publications and technical transfer.

Research group for Data Mining and User Modeling

The Data Mining and User Modeling group was created in May 2008 and is headed by Nuria Oliver.

The group´s research focuses on human-centered approaches to data analysis for user modeling, including data mining, mobility models and social network analysis, and algorithms for decision support and business/collective intelligence. The group emphasizes principled data analysis taking multi-disciplinary approaches that consider socio-cultural contexts, psychological factors and personal preferences in order to innovate and bring benefits to users of services of the Telefónica Group worldwide.

 

Internet research group

In November 2006, the Internet research group was created under the direction of Pablo Rodríguez, and its main office was set up in the Barcelona centre. Its activities focus on the problems related to open research on the Internet, such as, for example, large-scale distributed systems, the new generation of recommender systems and social networks, and latest generation of wireless systems.

Multimedia research group

At the end of 2007, a Multimedia research group was created under the direction of Nuria Oliver and this was also located in the Barcelona centre. The group focuses on long-term research into problems related to multimedia, computing through mobile phones, and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).
